Playa Guiones is why surfers move here: a 7-kilometer sand-bottom beach break that picks up almost any south or southwest swell and stays rideable well over 330 days a year — one of the most consistent waves anywhere. On a normal day it is 2–6 feet of rolling, forgiving peaks spread along the whole beach, so crowds thin out if you walk five minutes. Beginners get whitewater and gentle insides; on bigger swells the outside peaks turn into fast, punchy walls that keep advanced surfers honest. No rocks, no reef, no boat needed.
Playa Pelada, the next cove north, is smaller and shiftier — a locals' hangout with rock sections, best around mid tide when Guiones is closing out. Playa Garza to the south offers softer waves in front of the fishing village. And 20 minutes north, Ostional's river-mouth breaks throw heavier, hollower waves over dark sand — experts only, and check conditions locally, since the beach is a protected turtle refuge (see our day trips guide). If in doubt, stay at Guiones; it handles every level.
There is no flat season. December–April (dry season) brings morning offshores, clean 2–4 foot days and the biggest crowds. May–November (green season) pulls in bigger, more powerful south swells — the best waves of the year for intermediates and up, with far fewer people; September–October are the most consistent and the emptiest. Mornings are glassy year-round; wind picks up after noon. Most peaks prefer mid tide — everything gets faster and shallower toward low. Water is warm all year; nobody wears more than a rash guard.
Nosara is one of the world's best places to learn. Tico-run schools like Nosara Tico Surf School, Agua Tibia Surf School, Cachos Surf School, Chorotegas Surf School and Nosara CR Surf School teach right on Guiones with boards included, while Safari Surf School runs full surf-camp packages and Surf Simply is the famous high-end coaching resort with video analysis and tiny student ratios. Lessons run around $50–70; multi-day packages drop the rate. Every school answers on WhatsApp through the app.
Rent before you fly a board bag here — the dirt roads are hard on gear. Coconut Harry's Surf Shop and Nosara Surf Shop are the full-service veterans for rentals, wax and ding repair; Juan Surfo's Surf Shop is the friendly local option; and Olo Alaia Surf & Brew sells boards alongside good coffee. Daily rentals run $10–20 with weekly discounts, and most shops trade or buy used boards if you fall in love with one.
Guiones has a resident crew of professional surf photographers who shoot the peaks every morning — Saltshots (Callum Morse), Samba to the Sea, Norte Surf Club, Graham Swindel and the daily Photography Surf Report. Book a session before your best day or just check their feeds; odds are someone already caught your wave. It is the best souvenir the town sells.
The lineup is friendly if you are: do not paddle straight to the main peak on day one, do not drop in, and give learners on the inside room. Rip currents are the main hazard — they run next to the sandbars, and if you get caught, paddle parallel to the beach, not against the current. There are no lifeguards; surf with someone in sight. Respect the no-vehicles rule on the beach and pack out everything. Sunrise sessions beat both the wind and the crowd.
